Bentonite Lubrication for Pipe Jacking
During pipe jacking, a hydraulic bentonite grout pump can supply slurry to injection ports around the outside of the pipe. The bentonite slurry helps form a lubricating layer between the pipe and surrounding ground, reducing friction as the pipe advances.
Delivery requirements change with ground conditions, jacking distance and slurry losses. Adjustable pump output allows the supply to be coordinated with the injection arrangement and construction progress. Where several injection points are used, the distribution manifold, valves and monitoring equipment should be specified as part of the pumping system.
Slurry Supply for Microtunnelling
Microtunnelling projects may require bentonite lubrication along the installed pipe string. A plunger grout pump can feed this lubrication circuit when its capacity and material compatibility meet the project requirements.
This duty is distinct from the main excavation slurry circulation system. The lubrication pump should be selected for the required injection rate and pressure, rather than assumed to handle the much larger flow or excavated solids associated with spoil transport.
Cement-Bentonite Grouting around Underground Works
For specified ground treatment or filling tasks, a hydraulic plunger grout pump can deliver compatible cement-bentonite mixtures through the designated grouting lines. The cement and bentonite proportions must follow the approved mix design, with equipment selection accounting for viscosity, particle size and working time.
Pure bentonite slurry used for lubrication should not be treated as equivalent to a hardening cement-based grout. The required function—lubrication, filling or ground treatment—determines the material formulation and placement method.
Managing Delivery through Tunnel Pipelines
Pipeline length, internal diameter, bends and elevation changes influence the pressure needed to deliver bentonite slurry. As the tunnel advances, an extended delivery line may require a reassessment of the operating conditions.
Pump selection should therefore confirm the available flow at the required working pressure. Pressure measured at the pump is not necessarily the pressure at the injection point, particularly over long delivery routes.
Coordinating Mixing and Pumping
Bentonite must be properly dispersed and hydrated according to the material specification before use. A coordinated mixing, holding and pumping arrangement helps maintain a consistent feed to the plunger pump. The suction line should suit the slurry viscosity and required output, while cleaning access should be considered for planned stoppages and material changes.
